Adoption fee for a dog is $100 (cash or check only, non-refundable) includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines including Rabies.
Virginia law says that we have to keep a dog for 5 days (10 days if the dog has a collar) so that the owner can claim it before we can put the dog up for adoption. If you are interested in a particular dog before its available date please contact us. We would like a dog to go to a new home or rescue as soon as possible after its "available" date.
The adoption fee for dogs (payable on the day of adoption) includes spaying or neutering, a rabies vaccine (given when the animal is sterilized), a DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus) vaccine, a bordetella vaccine and a microchip. Adopters will leave the Shelter with an appointment already scheduled at one of our local vet clinics for the spay or neuter of their new pet. For more information see our Adoption Information page.
For animals that have not been spayed or neutered: adoptions are open to residents of Grayson, Carroll, Patrick, Floyd, Pulaski, Wythe, Smyth and Washington County, VA. If an animal is already spayed or neutered then it is available to be adopted by anyone (even out of state residents). Phone to check that the dog is available and what paperwork is required from you.Make sure that you are able to take your dog home on the day you adopt it. We will not keep a dog for you after its "available" day.

Want to help shelter animals but do not have time to volunteer?
You can still make a big difference.
We are always in need of supplies to help care for the animals, and every donation, no matter how small, goes a long way. The less time we spend shopping for essentials, the more time we can spend helping these animals find loving homes. Click here for more info.
Do not forget to bring your pets inside when it is too cold outside. IF IT IS TOO COLD FOR YOU, IT IS TOO COLD FOR THEM! The law says: During cold weather, a dog shelter must have a windbreak at its entrance and have bedding material that is sufficient to protect the animal from cold and promote the retention of body heat.
